Kali Majapahit is a Southeast Asian martial arts system with elements of Filipino Kali, Indonesian Silat, Muay Thai and Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do. Our KM Kids curriculum is designed for the abilities and needs of children from six to 12 years of age, supporting their mental and physical developmental milestones. The program builds physical skills of balance, coordination and control through techniques using a long staff, sticks, traditional empty hands and kicking systems. In addition, the program supports character development in areas of leadership, confidence, persistence, focus, excellence, self-discipline, teamwork, attitude, respect, courage, creativity and responsibility in a fun and nurturing environment.

For children aged six to 12, the most important thing to consider is the overall purpose of the program, which matters even more than the particular style of martial arts. Are the goals and activities relevant to your child’s age? Do the instructors interact positively with students? Does your child feel comfortable? Is there a nurturing community? Martial arts isn’t just a physical education course in fighting and self-defense, it’s a journey full of life lessons for self-development, character-building and holistic health. A good program will support that.

Kali Majapahit is a blend of traditional martial arts taught in a structured, modern way. We focus on both physical and mental development, with a curriculum that’s designed with education specialists and occupational therapists.

We follow appropriate developmental milestones for gross motor skills such as core strength (muscular control of the torso), bilateral coordination (the simultaneous use of both sides of the body), hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, and balance. The list of foundational exercises and their specific purposes can be found here[permalink].

We model the KM Kids program on 12 key values that are relevant to our students’ experiences both in the dojo and outside of it. These values are leadership, confidence, persistence, focus, excellence, self-discipline, teamwork, attitude, respect, courage, creativity and responsibility. While everyday classes are built around all of these values, each cycle focuses on a specific one, with discussions and homework assignments designed for self-reflection and personal growth. Here are some examples of specific ways in which KM Kids teaches these values:

  • Leadership: Students are given opportunities to lead the class by directing warm ups and assisting with demonstrations, while intermediate and advanced students mentor younger students by helping them learn and practice drills.
  • Confidence: We nurture confidence in our students by presenting challenging lessons and then providing the guidance and tools they need to rise to those challenges. With each cycle, as students see their abilities grow, they develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
  • Persistence: As they advance through belt levels, KM Kids learn that success comes to those who put in hard work and dedication in the long run. There are no shortcuts to success.
  • Focus: Concentration is built into every physical drill in the KM Kids curriculum. In addition, students practice deep listening skills and meditation exercises.
  • Excellence: Progress through the KM Kids program is determined by each student’s individual ability and achievements. Kali Majapahit is a non-competitive curriculum, which means that students are challenged to strive for their own personal best with each testing.
  • Self-discipline: Performing regular practices and habits with diligence helps students build and improve their ability to commit to long-term goals and choose the necessary steps every day to achieve them. In addition, in KM Kids classes, students will experience times of intense energy or quiet concentration, group work or self-reflection, and develop a sense of how to apply themselves appropriately to each situation.
  • Teamwork: KM Kids develop a sense of teamwork through a number of targeted practices, such as protecting their partners during drills, being aware of other students and sharing the space safely with them, welcoming new students and helping younger students improve.
  • Attitude: We help our students develop a “champion’s mindset,” providing positive role models in all of our instructors and creating an atmosphere of positivity in our dojo and all of our classes.
  • Respect: Respect encompasses deference to elders, common courtesy towards peers, civic duty and even esteem for oneself. We teach our students to understand which behaviors are OK and which are not, and why it’s important to be respectful to teachers, students, the dojo and equipment, and even themselves.
  • Courage: KM Kids students learn how to recognize fears and discover healthy ways to overcome them through appropriate challenges, presented by both curriculum and instructors, which provide obstacles that are big enough to challenge without being insurmountable.
  • Creativity: The cornerstone of problem-solving, creativity is nurtured through fun opportunities, such as designing obstacle courses and …[more examples?].
  • Responsibility: In daily life, it means being dependable, trustworthy and accountable. In KM Kids, students are expected to attend regularly and arrive for their sessions on time and in their proper uniform. They are also encouraged to care for their own equipment, packing and carrying their bags themselves.

Our KM Kids instructors have years of experience teaching primary-aged children, and we’re dedicated to their continuing professional development, investing in regular training modules both in house and with external experts and coaches. Beyond their paper qualifications, our KM Kids instructors care about every student, paying individual attention to each one.

KM Kids is designed for children aged six to 12. Younger children, aged three to five, are placed in our Lil’Ninjas program[permalink].

Starting a new activity is a process. The first step is to have your child come in and try a class. In our experience, it will probably take more than one session before your child feels fully comfortable and able to follow an entire class. After all, it’s a new environment with new activities and teachers. But with a little bit of time and patience, and encouragement from our instructors, they’ll ease into it.

Absolutely! Some of our most enthusiastic students and teachers are girls and women. Your daughter will find plenty of positive female role models at Kali Majapahit.

We limit each KM Kids class to 10 students at our River Valley dojo, eight at Upper Serangoon Road and 10 at Katong. Space is allotted on a first-come-first-served basis.

We maintain a general ratio of one teacher for every four students. Each KM Kids class has a lead instructor accompanied by an assistant instructor.

Values are a core foundation of the KM Kids program. The curriculum is purpose-built to develop responsibility for one’s actions. Martial arts teach children confidence and respect, so they don’t fall victim to bullies or feel the need to become bullies themselves. It also teaches them not to use their skills without their parents’ permission, even in play.

Bullying is not tolerated at our dojo, and because class sizes are small, teachers are able to observe interactions between students and act quickly to address any conflicts. Furthermore, through the KM Kids program children build self-confidence, which makes them less likely to become targets for bullying or bullies themselves. In fact, we have helped many parents and students handle bullying at school or on the playground.

Absolutely. We’re happy to arrange a trial session for a nominal fee. WhatsApp us at 6534-5254 to make a booking.

Bring your child in something comfortable, like a T-shirt and shorts or loose-fitting pants. Don’t worry about sports shoes, as we train barefoot. Make sure they have a water bottle, too, and we’ll take care of the rest!

Our schedule is posted on our website here[hyperlink: https://kali-majapahit.com/schedule/] and at the main entrances of all dojos. Current Kali Majapahit students can access the schedule via our mobile app.

You can choose a monthly or quarterly membership, with quarterly membership offering a discount. Contact us at 6534-5254 or contact@kali-majapahit.com. We sometimes offer promotional packages.

Once you become a member, all payments can be made via the Kali Majapahit app. Otherwise, membership payments can be made using any credit or debit card, including VISA, MasterCard or American Express. For equipment and testing fees, we accept cash, NETS, PayNow and PayLah! The Kali Majapahit UEN is 200914741W. For PayNow and PayLah! payments, please indicate your child’s name with the transfer.

Registration and administrative fees are included with monthly and quarterly fees. With a monthly or quarterly membership, your child can attend as many KM Kids sessions as he or she wishes.

Students are required to purchase uniform pants and gi (jacket), foam sticks and boxing gloves at extra cost. When new belts are presented at graduation, the cost of these are included in the testing fee, however replacements for lost or damaged belts must be purchased. Please note that as kids advance through the levels, pants and gi colors will change – those will need to be purchased separately, as well as additional equipment such as nunchaks. Optional items, such as Kali Majapahit branded gym bags and T-shirts, are also for sale.

At each cycle’s end, a testing fee of $25 will be collected from students who have been selected for testing. This fee includes a diploma, new rank (and new belt, if applicable) and the testing and graduation event itself.

Students can also top up their membership by $30 per month for the option to train at any of our locations.

For each session your child will need to wear a complete Kali Majapahit-issued KM Kids uniform. For beginners, this consists of a pair of white pants, a white gi (jacket) and a colored level belt. For intermediates, the uniform consists of black pants and a white gi. For advanced levels the uniform is either a red or black gi with black pants.

All levels are required to have and maintain a pair of foam sticks and a pair of appropriately-sized boxing gloves. Intermediate-level students will have the option to purchase a pair of nunchaks and a bo stick. All other equipment related to training will be supplied by the dojo.

We also recommend that each child bring a water bottle.

The dojo expects each student to come prepared for class in the proper uniform and with a complete set of required equipment. Under special circumstances, instructors may consider lending dojo equipment to students.

Over time, boxing gloves get smelly, sticks get grimy and gym bags smell like, well… gym bags. We recommend that all our students make a habit of emptying their gym bags at home after class, and placing their foam sticks, boxing gloves, nunchaks and bags where they can receive plenty of light and fresh air to prevent the growth of molds that can cause odor and reduce the longevity of the equipment.

For safety reasons, we require that all broken or damaged equipment be replaced.

We understand that situations change sometimes. We also want our students and their parents to feel truly benefited by our program. All we ask is for a 30-day termination notice.

Yes! We can freeze your membership if you require a break of more than two weeks. Email  us at contact@kali-majapahit.com.

For the safety of our students and instructors, our COVID-19 safety measures are as follows:

  • KM Kids sessions are limited to a specific number of children accompanied by one adult in compliance with Singapore government regulations regarding group sizes for sports activities.
  • Parents are required to book a place in advance for each child in each session.
  • Upon arrival at the dojo, each parent is required to log in via SafeEntry.
  • Students and their accompanying adult are required to have their temperature taken at the dojo entrance and sanitize their hands. Anyone with a temperature greater than 38.5 will not be allowed to enter.
  • Children or accompanying adults who are sick or with fever will not be allowed to enter the dojo.
  • Students who arrive more than 10 minutes late for a session will not be allowed to enter the dojo.
  • Children and accompanying adults are required to wear masks and practice social distancing inside the dojo at all times.
  • Accompanying adults are requested to stay in the assigned viewing/waiting area.
  • Students who feel sick during class are advised to inform an instructor promptly.

Our policies are subject to change as the COVID-19 situation is fluid. In the event of changes, we will notify parents promptly via email.

Parents with registered KM Kids will have access to our mobile app to book sessions. The app is available for Android and Apple.

Only students with a booking will be allowed to attend class. We regret any inconvenience as this is for safety purposes and to ensure the standard of our classes.

Kindly remove your child’s name from class as soon as you know he or she can’t make a session.

While it’s not required, we recommend that you inform us if you’re planning a holiday that’s longer than a week or two, so that we can let you know how it may affect your child’s eligibility for selection and testing.

We regret that we can’t allow children who are more than 10 minutes late to enter the dojo.

You can update these details and more via our mobile app.

Let us know! Uniforms are available for purchase directly from our academies, as are all required equipment. Our team will be happy to recommend the right size for a perfect fit.

All updates can be done via our mobile app.

We have lockers at our River Valley location, available for rent at S$40 per month or S$20 per month if shared. Ask our team or email contact@kali-majapahit.com.

For parents of new students: We will email a digital Welcome Pack with information about how to complete the registration process and prepare their child for their KM Kids journey. Prior to Selection Week and testing, we will also email complete details about the KM Kids testing process.

For parents of existing students: We will send out a New Cycle Email with important information and reminders at the start of each cycle. Additional emails will be sent in advance of Selection Week and testing to provide details about the testing procedure and a reminder of the testing schedule. Every January, we’ll email holiday closures for the year ahead. We will also send emails on an ad hoc basis reminding of dojo holiday closures or changes to Kali Majapahit or KM Kids policy.

Under special circumstances, we may need to discuss a child’s progress with parents. In these instances, we will send an email to request a good time to chat in person at the parents’ convenience.

You sure do! We’re thankful for word-of-mouth recommendations, and are happy to offer… something.

We get this question a lot! In fact, we’ve made a video to demonstrate the proper way to put on the pants, gi (jacket) and tie the belt. You can see it here[hyperlink]. We encourage KM Kids students to know how to put on their complete uniform independently, so please practice with them at home until they are able to do so.

Each dojo has a changing room, and there are toilets at River Valley and Katong. For the dojo at Upper Serangoon, toilets are located outside the dojo, within the shopping mall.

The KM Kids curriculum is created for children from six to 12 years of age. As kids approach their 12th birthday, we will contact parents to discuss the transition from KM Kids class to the KM Adults class. We have special classes when our teen students can train together and support each other.

Each year has four training cycles that last 12 weeks each. Within each cycle, from Weeks 1 through 9, students will spend time learning and practicing skills and lessons. In Week 10, all students undergo Selection Week, when instructors observe individuals in class to assess their readiness for testing. Testing and graduation are held on the last Saturday of each cycle. There is no break between cycles, however the week immediately following testing is usually a time for fun and games!

We recommend KM Kids attend two sessions per week to get the most out of their training and to make sure they qualify for testing and advancement to the next rank!

Our schedule can be found on our mobile app or here[hyperlink to: https://kali-majapahit.com/schedule/].

No problem. You can sign up for a multi-location membership with a top up of S$30 per month when you register.

Yes. At the River Valley and Katong dojos, one parent is welcome to observe the class from designated areas within the dojo. At the Upper Serangoon Road dojo, parents can sit outside under cover and observe through the large front window.

Though we encourage you to stick around and see your kids in action, we also understand it isn’t always convenient. Once your child has had their temperature taken, feel free to leave him or her in our good hands. Please arrive on time to pick up your child after class, as instructors will not be able to look after them after the class ends.

Yes, they can. However, please note that children will need to be supervised to ensure they don’t disrupt the class in session.

We do allow it, but we ask you to please respect the privacy of our students by avoiding taking pictures or videos of other children without their parents’ permission, especially if you are planning to share them on social media.

Sure! We love it when our KM Kids practice with their parents or on their own! We’ll even be happy to share tips on how to practice with them and lend you the necessary equipment (if available) for a short period of time.

During the primary school years, kids are still developing the mental tools needed for the kind of self-discipline and perseverance that long-term goals like martial arts training requires. When they feel unmotivated, this is where parents can help with a nudge or a pep-talk. Here are some ideas that can help if your child doesn’t feel like attending class:

  • Make sure your child gets plenty of rest, eats healthy meals and drinks plenty of water. Physical activity can feel impossible to a tired, hungry or thirsty kid.
  • Schedule KM Kids sessions regularly and make them an automatic part of your child’s overall daily plan. It’s easier to keep up the momentum once a positive habit is formed.
  • Rule out any possible physical reasons. Does your child feel unwell or have an injury? Even a stubbed toe can feel excruciating during class. Can your child “walk it off” or is it something that needs rest? If you need to remove your child’s name from a booked session at the last minute, it’s not a problem. Your child’s health is a priority.
  • Ask your child if they’re having a problem in class. Do they feel like they are getting along OK with the other students? With their instructors? Do they find the lessons too hard? Too easy? Are they nervous about Selection Week, testing or a demo? If your child has an issue, chances are there’s a simple solution.
  • Then again, it could be that your child simply feels lazy that day – we can all relate to that! Remind them how much fun they have once they’re actually at class and getting into the flow of it. After that, motivating your child could be as easy as guiding them through one step at a time. Pack your bag… Change your clothes… Leave the house… etc.
  • Let your child know that it’s perfectly normal to feel unmotivated from time to time. It’s part of the champion’s journey that every Olympic competitor and professional athlete (and even Kali Majapahit instructor!) faces every once in a while. The winners aren’t the ones who train when they feel like it, but the ones who can push through on good days and bad.
  • Talk to us! Over the years we’ve helped plenty of parents and kids work out all kinds of issues. We are here to provide the support that our students need to succeed in our program and beyond. It’s what we do!

At some point almost every child decides they want to quit an activity, even activities they normally love to do. It’s part of growing up, but can be a huge parenting challenge.

There’s some good advice to be found on the internet here[https://www.steampoweredfamily.com/brains/what-to-do-when-your-kid-wants-to-quit/] and here [https://www.familyeducation.com/life/exercise-sports/when-kids-want-quit].

One thing that we’ve found works is to ask your child to hold off on their decision until the end of the cycle. Often, once a child completes Selection Week, testing and graduation, the thrill of achieving the next belt level is enough to get them through the slump and back in the game.

If after graduation your child truly wants to quit KM Kids, come and talk to us. We will help in any way we can.

We LOVE hosting private birthday parties and our KM Kids and their friends love them, too! Information is included in the digital Welcome Pack or you can request details at contact@kali-majapahit.com.

See all the exciting things kids can do at a Kali Majapahit birthday party here[hyperlink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru3Ge1TmpXA]. Please note that this birthday party was held prior to COVID-19, so does not reflect the dojo’s current safety measures.

Yes! You can see it here[hyperlink].

Testing and graduation are held on the final day of each cycle, which is always a Saturday.

Two weeks prior to testing, students undergo Selection Week, a seven-day period during which students can demonstrate the skills they’ve learned over the course of the cycle. During class time, instructors will observe each student to determine if he or she is ready to progress to the next level. After Selection Week, we will send an email to the parents of each selected student to invite them for testing and provide details. Please note that students are required to attend classes regularly throughout the cycle to qualify for testing. They will also need to attend at least one session during Selection Week.

Kids are tested on how well they can demonstrate the skills and character traits covered over the course of the cycle.

There is a S$25 fee for testing and graduation, which can be paid via our mobile app. We also accept PayNow or PayLah! to UEN 200914741W (Kali Majapahit Pte Ltd) or NETS payments in person at our dojos. Payment must be made before the deadline, which is typically the Wednesday before testing. For PayNow and PayLah! transactions, please indicate the student’s name.

Punctuality is an integral part of the testing process. Students must arrive on time for testing and be dressed properly in their complete uniform and with all of their equipment. Students who do not fulfill these requirements will be ineligible for testing.

For students who will be away for testing and graduation, we can schedule a make-up test two weeks after the official date of testing at additional cost. We do encourage students to attend the official testing and graduation as it is an amazing time they share with their instructors and friends in class.

For students who are sick on the day of testing and graduation, please notify us via WhatsApp. Once your child is well, we can schedule a make-up test.

Contact us at 6534-5254 or contact@kali-majapahit.com to let us know, and we’ll try to find a way to make sure it doesn’t affect your child’s progression.

By and large, most children who attend classes regularly are well prepared for Selection Week, testing and graduation. In very rare instances, when our instructors observe that a child is experiencing difficulty with the lessons, we will reach out to parents via email to set up a good time to chat in person.

Drop us a line! Before and after sessions, our instructors are typically very busy and may not have the time to provide the answers you need. Feel free to call us at 6534-5254 or email contact@kali-majapahit.com with any questions you may have. We’re dedicated to providing a fun and rewarding learning journey for all our KM Kids and a fuss-free experience for their parents!

We follow appropriate developmental milestones for gross motor skills such as core strength (muscular control of the torso), bilateral coordination (the simultaneous use of both sides of the body), hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, and balance. The list  of foundational exercises and their specific purposes can be found here [permalink].

We model the Lil’Ninjas program on four key values that are relevant to our students’ experiences both in the dojo and outside of it. These values are focus, patience, respect and confidence. Beyond the basic ability to follow the classes, these values are taught through the following activities:

  • Focus (Focus Tiger): Students learn when to be energetic and when – and how – to be calm. For example, in class children will play, run and jump through the physical aspects of the training, and then be guided through exercises that teach them how to sit quietly, listen and pay attention to details.
  • Patience (Patience Panda): We nurture a sense of patience in our students, as they learn how to take turns, wait for others to complete their exercises, and even work through the progression of belt levels over time.
  • Respect (Respect Turtle): We teach our students to understand which behaviors are OK and which are not, and why it’s important to be kind and respectful to others – teachers and students alike.
  • Confidence (Confidence Monkey): Our students learn confidence every time they join an activity on their own, jump from one obstacle to the next, or maybe even help instructors lead the class in a warm-up!

Our Lil’Ninjas instructors have years of experience teaching pre-schoolers, and we’re dedicated to their continuing professional development, investing in regular training modules both in house and with external experts and coaches. Beyond their paper qualifications, our Lil’Ninjas instructors care about every student, paying individual attention to each one.

Children as young as three are welcome to start Lil’Ninjas! The program is designed for ages three to five.

We even welcome parents to join in the fun for the first session if their children feel apprehensive to join the group on their own.

We respect that every child develops at his or her own pace. Your child can start Kali in pampers or training pants – no pressure!

Please note that Lil’Ninjas are required to attend classes regularly throughout the cycle to qualify for testing. Lil’Ninjas will also need to attend at least one session during Selection Week.

They are tested on how well they can demonstrate the skills and character traits covered over the course of the cycle.
